SurePave Case Study | ABC Sheds Car Park Project
The Challenge:

ABC Sheds Global are a steel manufacturer for sheds, based in Young, New South Wales. With a large, loose gravel loading and storage area surrounding their property, they were experiencing significant issues with their pavement surface rutting and degrading from machinery and trucks moving through the yard, especially after rain. This degradation often led to the transfer of silt and mud onto the road and inside the shed, creating additional maintenance challenges and operational disruptions.

To create a more stable platform that would function in all weather, ABC Sheds originally considered concreting the 1200sqm storage area. However, obtaining consent for permanent concrete structure required additional stormwater design and lengthy approval processes. This meant ABC sheds required a cost-effective, short-term solution to repair the yard and make it more durable.

The Solution:

By turning to SurePave Permeable Pavers, ABC Sheds were able to install a stable, commercial loading and storage area that offered a similar functionality to a hard seal surface, with the added benefit of allowing any excess water to naturally infiltrate into the surrounding soil. SurePave panels filled with 14-20mm gravel mitigated both the stability and additional demand on stormwater drainage network.

Easy to install, the first step was to level and compact the existing road base sub-base, grading it so water would flow into the existing stormwater systems. This included carefully digging around existing concreted driveways to maintain a level transition between the two surfaces once complete.

A layer of crusher dust was then spread over the entire yard before the SurePave panels were placed on top. While ABC Sheds engaged a contractor to perform the earthworks and gravel filling, they chose to install the panels themselves.

To extend the longevity of the surface, the SurePave pavers were securely pinned in place using heavy duty steel screw-in pegs positioned through the pre-punched holes within the SurePave panels.

The SurePave installation process allowed minimal disruption to their factory operations. It took only five days to complete the entire SurePave installation, whereas a concrete pour of this size would have had to be done in stages with a longer shut down period.

Benefits of SurePave at ABC Sheds

Key advantage of SurePave panels

  1. SurePave Permeable Pavers with gravel provide a hard wearing surface.
  2. Lightweight and easy to handle, SurePave requires no specialised labour to install.
  3. Can be easily removable and recycled.
  4. Cost effective.
  5. Allows excess water to drain away during storm events.
  6. Once installed and filled, the surface is ready to use straight away.
The Results:

SurePave provided an all-weather loading and storage area that large vehicles can now drive over without the risk of being bogged down or transferring silt and mud inside the building and onto the road. Though perceived in this case as a short-term solution, SurePave will last a long time without degradation. With minimal disruption, ABC Sheds were able to resume their production efficiently by creating a more usable space within their yard.
